Can you name one magazine that does not showcase paper-thin models strutting the latest fashions or wearing the skimpiest of bikinis in its advertisements? Chances are you probably can’t. It is a sad reality that American society places so much emphasis on beauty and being thin. Anyone who doesn’t fit into that mold is bombarded with the latest magical product to help them conform. Oddly enough, even those who aren’t overweight often see themselves as being overweight and soon begin to hold themselves up to a standard portrayed through mass media. Any chance they get, they are flocking to the next miracle product to ensure that they fit into cookie cutter body type, never realizing that many of the products thrown at them can never substitute for some of the most basic and inexpensive tips known to help anyone lose weight and stay in shape.
Preparing Your Mind
Deciding to undertake a weight loss effort is not something that should be taken lightly. If you jump into it without adequate consideration and preparation, you could end up failing – and become despairing of your ability to succeed in the future. To succeed, you need to have realistic expectations, avoid magical thinking, set appropriate goals, know what rate of progress to expect, and understand what you need to do to achieve your goal. Weight loss is not something that will happen overnight. It is a continual process that will lead to long-term success.
Preparing Your Body
Although it’s true that taking weight off and keeping it off is not easy for most people, the potential health benefits of losing weight argue for continued efforts aimed at weight management. In order to achieve success with weight loss you must: (1) maintain a balanced diet involving mild caloric restriction, (2) be proactive in exercising regularly, (3) have an adequate understanding of what is required to achieve success, and (4) have sufficient commitment and motivation until you have obtained your desired results. Even then, all of the aforementioned steps should not cease once your target weight is reached as they are critical to ensuring that you do not fall back into your old habits and pack the weight back on.
Understanding the basics of nutrition will help you make healthier food choices. Protein, carbohydrates and fat in food are the three sources of energy for the body. While Americans tend to get plenty of protein, we eat too much fat and sugar and not enough complex carbohydrates in the form of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains. Not only do we consume too much fat, we impair our health by eating foods high in cholesterol and saturated fat, and by eating too many foods in which the fat has been hydrogenated, or turned into saturated fat.
In addition to the energy-producing components of food, the non-energy components such as vitamins, minerals, water and fiber play important roles in our health as well as weight management. Drinking at least six to eight glasses of water per day helps curb your appetite, and eating meals high in fiber helps you feel satisfied longer.
A “good” diet is one that ensures good health and is a diet you can live with. For most people, this means eating a varied diet, with all foods consumed in moderation. To get to this point, it may be necessary to take some time to learn and understand what you are eating, how adequate your choices are, and how to improve on these choices.
