In keeping with the Mind-Body-Faith Phenomenon, medical research has shown that people who pray, or have someone praying for them, reportedly heal up to seven times faster than those who don’t, lending credence to the promotion of prayer during times of infirmity, surgery, and disability. Recognizing that health, optimism, and spirituality go hand in hand with holistic, comprehensive care that provides for the patient as a whole-body, mind and spirit–health practitioners are in a prime position to encourage practical faith, and hence, spiritual practices in their patients.
With the compassion, understanding, and openness of today’s healthcare professionals, harnessing holistic, practical faith in patients during a hospital stay, as well as, in the medical office is something that can be easily accomplished in 5 easy steps:
1) Upon the first office visit or hospital admission, ask what religion the person is affiliated with, if any. This is often being done during the admission registration procedure in many hospitals already. This cursory spiritual assessment will help to establish what tradition a person follows, and allow the healthcare practitioner to move ahead with the next four steps when appropriate.
2) Check the patient chart to confirm any affiliation they may have, if any. This should be done before entering the room in a medical office or hospital, rather than with the patient just as one would peruse the patients chart in a professional manner.
3) If in the hospital inpatient, ask the patient if they would like to see a priest, minister, rabbi, or imam and arrange for the visit during their hospital stay.
4) Ask if they would like for you or a staff member to pray with them. Though someone may not be practicing a faith presently, perhaps they may still want to pray with a priest, minister, rabbi or imam, all the same. In providing holistic healthcare, it is important give them that opportunity.
5) Let patients know that medical research has shown that praying patients and those with others praying for them heal more quickly. Encouraging patients to continue to pray at home to promote self-help through practical faith is a good way to affirm them and assist with independent mind-body self-care.
These five steps are significant and important to the ongoing provision of holistic care for patients. Being respectful and inclusive of faith beliefs are integral parts of providing comprehensive, compassionate, professional healthcare, and the many benefits to patients are cost-effective and enduring.
