If your emotional state is tied to your physical, health, what might your body be telling you?
Emotional pain whether it is experienced as grief, shame, regret, anger, or loneliness has a relationship with the emotional heart and the body. Acting as a link between our mental and physical being, both the heart and body are essential elements in the mind-body connection. This “relationship” speaks to the way in which interaction between the heart and body directly affect how well your body works for you. By carrying emotional pain, you create and maintain painful experiences which get stored away in your emotional heart. A happy memory or emotion may somehow make you feel light-hearted or relaxed whereas a sad memory or emotion may leave you feeling heavy-hearted, or in tears. No matter what the experience, your body will respond to the way you think, and feel. If you were to examine the roots of where your physical problems lie, what would you learn about yourself? Here is what I learned.
Those who know me personally know of my love of horses. It was over twenty years ago that a riding accident left me with a debilitating pain in my lower back. There I was lying in the gutter unable to move. Clearly my body had been traumatized from the fall. Later on that day, still stiff and very sore, I was able to move, so I knew I would be alright. Eventually, all the pain disappeared, so you can imagine my surprise when years later the debilitating pain in my back returned. This pattern of vanishing and re-emerging pain occurred multiple times. I was treated by chiropractor’s, massage therapists, electric shock, and Advil. To some extent, these treatments helped; however, the relief was only temporary. Although stress had nothing to do with the original accident, it was the mind-body connection message created from that incident which set into motion an awareness of my entire being. Today the pain returns occasionally, but I have come to recognize my back pain as a “stress barometer”, a sign that I am “carrying too much stress” and an emotional release is needed. This was my lesson to be learned, and the pain was my teacher. Marilyn Sewell says it best, “The body has its own way of knowing. Knowing that has little to do with logic, little to do with control, and much to do with acceptance” thereby giving credence to an underlying message.
What do you need to do for yourself to reach your optimum mental and physical health?
The body is in perpetual communication with the mind, attracting what you project. Reorganized and rationalized in the mind, the mind draws on what it knows, what it is taught and what is experienced. Working in unison with the body, the heart listens and replies, expressing not only what is in your body but also in your mind.
