Has Building Your MLM Business Left You Frustrated and Discouraged?
One of the worst feelings in all of life is hopelessness. It drains you of all your creative energy and destroys your confidence. As the old saying goes, “It takes the wind out of your sails.”
I’ve experienced this feeling of hopelessness personally in my network marketing career.
A few years ago I started my first network marketing (also called multilevel marketing – MLM) business with a very good company.
Their products made a big difference in my own life. Therefore, I naturally assumed that everyone would want these products.
Needless to say, I was extremely fired up about this network marketing opportunity.
I didn’t expect to make tons of money overnight because I realized it takes time to learn and build a business. However, I did expect to make money as time progressed. I did everything I was taught to do. I attended all the meetings and seminars, contacted people, showed plans, and invested in company training materials.
After two years of building my network marketing business, I was no better off financially than when I started. This brought on a feeling of hopelessness. I thought to myself, “I’m doing everything I was taught to do and I’m still not getting anywhere. There’s got to be a better way.”
I began to look for answers. One interesting thing I learned was that 97% of all network marketers experience negative cash flow. In other words, more money is spent building and operating their MLM business than is generated by their network marketing business.
This discovery made me think, “Hmmm…, there’s something here that just doesn’t add up.”
As I continued to dig for answers I discovered a lot of other things that didn’t add up regarding the traditional methods of building a network marketing business.
However, along the journey I began to find answers that gave me hope. Today I have more hope than ever. I now have wind in my sails, and the excitement is back!
One of the best feelings in life is to give other people hope.
So, if you’re at a point in your network marketing journey where you feel burned out, frustrated, and hopeless, there is good news for you.
One of the main causes of hopelessness in network marketing lies in the way prospecting is done. Prospecting is simply the methods you use to find people who are interested in what your MLM company has to offer.
Regarding prospecting, most network marketing companies have for many years taught their distributors to:
1) Make a list of everybody you know. That includes family, friends, coworkers, people who attend your church, bowling buddies, softball teammates, business associates, your barber, your real estate agent, etc., etc.
2) Contact the people on your list and book an appointment.
3) During the appointment, show “The Plan” to your prospect and convince them that your MLM company’s product and business opportunity are of great value to them.
If you find someone who is interested in your opportunity by using the above strategy, then GREAT! That’s what you want.
When I started my first network marketing business I did not see anything wrong with the traditional network marketing prospecting strategy. To me it seemed logical. I knew lots of people, so making a list was no problem.
I also had a good reputation with people, so I thought everyone I knew would want to listen to what I had to say. The product associated with my MLM opportunity made a big difference in my own life, so I naturally assumed it was something everyone would want. I was excited and ready to get to work.
After months of contacting people, it became apparent that most of the people on my list weren’t even interested in the product or the MLM home business opportunity.
After a couple years of contacting people, what I discovered was that on average, of 100 people I contacted, 10 of them would show some level of interest in what I had to offer. Out of those 10 people, maybe 1 person was interested in joining my team as a product consumer and/or a business builder.
One out of one hundred is not a good return on the investment of precious time.
Contacting is also very time consuming and labor intensive. Because of the frantic pace of life in our modern times, it’s very rare to actually talk to someone on the first phone call. They’re usually not home and you end up leaving messages on their voice mail. It often takes several attempts before you actually talk to someone.
Showing “The Plan” is also time consuming and labor intensive. Sometimes you have to drive a long distance. If this is the case, one plan can take an entire evening.
