How to Fix a Key Fob That isnt Working If your key fob isnt functioning A few easy steps can be taken to fix it First check to make sure its not the backup remote If your backup remote can unlock and lock the doors of your car it is likely that the main remote isnt functioning The most common causes of key malfunctions for car remotes are battery or circuitry issues Battery The battery inside a key fob can wear out over time It is simple to replace batteries However it is important that you choose the right kind You can refer to your owners manual or call the manufacturer to determine the right kind It is also crucial to check the battery compartment since dead batteries can leak toxic chemicals that could damage the remote If changing the battery doesnt solve the issue there may be additional issues that require professional attention For instance if buttons seem stuck or broken it may be necessary to disassemble the remote and rework its components It is also possible to reprogramme the vehicle to recognize the new device Buttons Due to repeated use key fobs could become worn and dirty This is not uncommon however it can cause buttons to cease functioning or require a difficult press to get them to function This can be extremely frustrating especially if youre away from home and need to start your vehicle Fortunately even worn out or damaged buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and a few materials you have in the house First check that key repair for car are properly charged and that the indentation on the back of the button is filled Then carefully open the remote and examine the circuit board Check for indications of rust or other signs the buttons have been worn or damaged For example the paint that conducts electricity could be missing Use a Qtip dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that has become damaged or where conductive painting is missing Avoid rubbing too hard as this can erode the conductive paint and stop the button firing when it is pressed Also be sure to check the battery connectors terminals to ensure any loose solder connections If this is the case simply reconnecting them may restore function to the button You can use the same method to restore functionality to any other loose connection within the fob If any of the rubber buttons located at the front of the keyfob are not working or need to be pressing extremely hard the graphite disks at the back of the button may have worn out and require replacement You can do this by rubbing a pen over the disks This will bring the button back to life If none of these solutions work or you not be able to get the button respond when pressed hard it is possible that the circuitry has failed It is possible to fix this by a quick clean and refitting but its recommended to have an additional fob in case this method fails for you Circuitry The circuit board of the remote control could be dirty regardless of whether the buttons on the key fob work or not A very thorough inspection will usually resolve this problem Water and broken cases are the most common causes of dirty boards A damaged case could allow water and other debris to enter the circuit board causing it to short Water can also destroy pins and connectors on the board which are known as vias If youre able to open your key fob and arent afraid of a little mess we can desolder the buttons and then solder new ones in their place Also you should check the connections between battery terminals If theyre loose the buttons may not function properly or become stuck in their down position Soldering the terminals and buttons back in place is usually all thats required to return a nonworking key fob to working condition NonRemote Transponder Chips Sealed nonremote transponder chips are more durable than the remote fobs that contain them however they are still susceptible to being damaged by a hole that is made in them or pushed over by a lawnmowers or car door handle Most of the time nonremote transponder chip malfunctions could be attributed to a blown fuse If youre not comfortable opening the key fob take the circuit board off and use a multimeter to check that the diode is working properly If youre not confident doing this go to your local hardware store or the Oreillys and theyll usually have a radio frequency tester that can let you know whether the key fob sending signals Programming Key fobs endure many abuses and arent indestructible They can break their connection with the receiver inside your vehicle due to shocks or low battery requiring reprogramming A professional auto locksmith or the main dealer can reprogram your key fob and get it back functioning again If resetting or replacing your key fob fails you may need to replace it
