How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T5549 then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T5549 using a grey wire The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster The sensor serves as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and the position of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing The code wont appear without the additional information provided by other sensors G4 or G40 Its a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector and each one has different functions The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component 2 Injectors Yesterday when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing anymore I took out the spark plugs this morning 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry When I start the engine there are no sparks I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out but the 4th stays shut I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I got 0ohm I think the issue is in another location I also tried to reset PID but without success The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it runs fine with the G28 connected However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM The coolant sensor G62 even if it is not plugged in shows a temperature of 49c I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero Im not sure what to do I feel like ive pretty much all other possibilities out Im afraid i may have missed something Let me know if you have any ideas TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump of the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or at a parts store Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors end up and 2 2nd from left on the black connectors side They should be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines have an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors etc To do over here it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If Suggested Webpage of these sensors go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal or a misfire in gear If you are experiencing any of these problems it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced Theyre cheap and easy to find especially in the case of an Bosch model like ours Alternately GMs version this part is a good option 5 Tachometer A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your vehicle Its an essential component of the Audis transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicles crankshaft is rotating This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T5549 via a grey wire audi a4 key replacement uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel timig and boost and also sends it on to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer Also you can verify continuity between pin T5549 of the ECU and pin T6a1 of the instrument cluster trace 79trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and pin T26a12 You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these two points This is a common feature across the Audi 80100200RS2 range from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU so you might find good ones in wrecking yards
