How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire T5549 which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T5549 The ECU then uses this information to control fuel timig and boost It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing However the error code wont appear on its own without additional information from other sensors G4 and G40 It is a little tricky to test as there are several connector pins and each one has different functions The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is fully operational it should read about 1000 ohms Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this component 2 Injectors Yesterday while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll I experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more Today i pulled out the spark plugs three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry When I crank the engine with no sparks I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline pop out but the 4th stay closed I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I got zero ohm Therefore i think the issue is elsewhere I also tried to reset PID without success The car is able to start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM The coolant sensor G62 even when unplugged still shows a temperature of 49c Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 00 if i crank up the engine Im not certain what to do but i think ive pretty much ruled out everything else But im worried that I might have missed something If anyone has any suggestions please chime in TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store Testing read this post here is easy put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors side up and 2 2nd from the left on the black end of the connector They should be infinite ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors etc To do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If you encounter a problem with either one of these the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal andor an unfire when in gear It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these symptoms The good thing is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly if youre looking at an Bosch unit which is what ours are If read this post here prefer GMs version of this component is an excellent choice 5 Tachometer A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for numerous problems in your car Its an essential component of your Audis transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the cars crankshaft is spinning This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of transmission above the flywheel ring It transmits signals via a gray wire to the ECU pin T5549 The ECU then processes the signal to control fuel timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer between ECU pin T5549 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a1 trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a12 You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points This is the same across the Audi 80100200RS2 series starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards
