How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor This sensor is situated at the edge of transmission just above the flywheel gear It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T5549 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission directly above the flywheel ring The sensor transmits signals through the grey wire to pin T5549 The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way If audi spare keys fails when it fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing However the code wont appear on its own without additional information from other sensors G4 and G40 It is a little tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is functional it should read about 1000 ohms Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part 2 Injectors Yesterday while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll I experienced massive power loss as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all This morning i pull out the spark plugs 3 were drenched in gazoline the 4th one was dry I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks the ones with gazoline jump out The 4th one stays shut I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 1455 3055 and 4855 i get 0ohm Im assuming that the issue is elsewhere I also tried to reset the PID with no success The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it is running fine with the G28 connected However the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM The temperature sensor for coolant G62 shows the wrong temp value that is 49c even after unplugging it I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 00 when I crank up the engine Im not certain what to do i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else But i am afraid I might have missed something Let me know If you have any suggestions TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor The GMstyle sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store Testing them is easy to do just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 with the bump on the connector end up and 2 2nd from left on the black connectors end They should be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc To do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If either of these go wrong you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal andor a misfire when you are in gear It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these signs Theyre inexpensive and easy to locate especially if theyre an Bosch sensor like ours Alternatively GMs version of this part is an option 5 Tachometer A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your car It is an important part of the transmission of your Audi because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slowly the engine is spinning This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission just above the flywheel ring It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T5549 The ECU then processes the signal to control the flow of fuel timig and boost as well as sends it on to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer between ECU pin T5549 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a1 trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a12 It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points This is a common component across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards
