Evolution Korea The financial crisis that struck Asia forced a major reappraisal of the old system of businessgovernment alliances and public management of private risks In Korea this required a change in the development paradigm In a controversial move the South Korean government has requested textbooks publishers to ignore calls for removing examples of evolution in high school science textbooks This includes evidence for the evolution of horses and of the Avian an ancestor Archaeopteryx 1 Evolution and Religion A creationist group in South Korea has successfully convinced textbook publishers to remove evidence of evolution in high school science textbooks The Society for Textbook Revise an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research that wants to rid biology textbooks of atheist materialism was behind the move The STR claims that this kind of materialistic thinking creates a negative picture for students and could lead to their eventual denial of faith When the STRs ad campaign made the news scientists across the world expressed worry In a letter to the editor of Nature evolutionary biologist Jae Choe of Ewha Womans University in Seoul complained that South Korea had given in to religious prejudice He was supported by colleagues from around the country who formed a group named Evolution Korea to organize an antitextbook petition Researchers are worried about the possibility that the STR campaign will be spread to other regions of the world where the prevalence of creationism is rising 에볼루션 카지노 to Nature warned of the antievolutionist campaign putting pressure on textbook revisions specifically in countries with large Christian and Muslim population South Koreas culture is particularly strong for the debate on evolution Twentysix percent of the countrys citizens are members of a religious denomination and the majority of them adhere to Christianity or Buddhism Many Koreans also adhere to Chondogyo the philosophy based on Confucian principles that emphasizes harmony in the social personal selfcultivation and selfrespect Chondogyo teaches the human being is one with Hanulnim the God of Sun and that heavenly blessings can be achieved by doing good deeds All of this has created an ideal environment for the spread of creationism Multiple studies have shown students who have religious backgrounds to be more uncomfortable learning about evolution than those who do not However the underlying causes of this phenomenon are not known One explanation is that students who have religious backgrounds tend to be as wellversed in scientific concepts and theories and are therefore more susceptible to the influence of creationists Another reason could be that students with religious beliefs tend to view evolution as an atheistic idea and therefore less comfortable with it 2 Evolution and Science In recent times the scientific community has been concerned about antievolution initiatives in schools A study conducted in 2009 found that over 40 percent of Americans believe that biological evolution is a lie and that a belief in it would conflict with their religious beliefs 에볼루션코리아 believe that despite the popularity of creationism the best way to combat this movement is to educate the public about the evidence supporting evolution Scientists are required to instruct their students in science including the theory of evolution They should also educate the public on the process of scientific research and how knowledge is confirmed They must also explain how scientific theories are frequently challenged and revised However misconceptions about nature and purpose of research can fuel antievolution views For instance many people may confuse the word theory with the everyday meaning of the word a hunch or a guess In the realm of science a theory is thoroughly tested and verified using evidence A theory that has survived repeated testing and observation is a scientific principle The debate over evolutionary theory is an excellent opportunity to discuss the significance of the scientific method and its limitations It is crucial that people understand that science cannot answer questions about lifes purpose or meaning but rather provides a mechanism for living things to grow and evolve Moreover a wellrounded education must include exposure to all the major scientific fields including evolutionary biology This is particularly important because the jobs that people hold and the decisions they make require a knowledge of how science works The majority of scientists around the world agree that humans have changed over time In a recent study which predicted adults views of the consensus on this subject those with higher levels of education and knowledge of science were found to be more likely believe that there is wide agreement among scientists regarding human evolution People with a higher level of religious belief but less scientific knowledge tend to be more divided It is essential that teachers insist on the importance of gaining an understanding of this consensus to enable people to make informed decisions regarding the use of energy health care and other policy matters 3 Evolution and Culture Cultural evolution is a close relative of the popular evolutionary theory It focuses on the ways that humans and other species learn from each other Researchers in this field utilize explanation models and tools adapted from those used by evolutionary theorists and they look back to human prehistory to discover the origins of our capacity for cultural understanding This method also acknowledges that there are differences between biological and cultural characteristics While biological traits are generally acquired in one go in sexual species during fertilization but cultural traits can be acquired over a long period of time This means that the acquisition of one cultural characteristic can affect the development of another In Korea For instance the introduction of Western fashion elements in the late 19th and early 20th century was the result of a complex series of events One of the most important was the arrival in Korea of Japanese occupation forces that introduced Western hairstyles and clothing After that when Japan left Korea in the 1930s a few of these trends began revert At the close of World War II Korea was once more united and again under the Choson dynasty rule Today Korea is a vibrant economic and political power Despite the current global financial crisis the economy of Korea has grown consistently over the last decade and is expected to sustain its steady growth in the near future The current government is faced by a myriad of problems One of the biggest is its inability to develop a coherent policy to deal with the economic crisis The crisis has revealed the weaknesses of the countrys economy policies including its excessive dependence on foreign investment and exports that may not be sustainable over the long term Since the financial crisis has destroyed the confidence of investors the government must rethink its economic strategy and look for alternatives to increase domestic demand To ensure a stable financial climate the government will need reform its incentive and monitoring systems as well as discipline and monitoring This chapter provides a variety of scenarios of how the Korean economy might develop after the crisis 4 Evolution and Education A fundamental challenge for evolution educators is how to present evolutionary concepts in ways that are appropriate for students of various ages and developmental stages Teachers should for instance be aware of the religious diversity in their classrooms and create an environment where students with both secular and religious beliefs are at ease Teachers must also be able to identify common misconceptions regarding evolution and be able to correct them in the classroom Teachers must also be able to access a range of resources for teaching evolution and be able to find them quickly In this context the Thinking Evolutionarily Convocation was a crucial step in bringing together evolutionary scientists and educators from a range of disciplines to discuss most effective methods of teaching evolution Participants included representatives from scientific societies educational research officials from government funding agencies and curriculum developers The convergence of these diverse groups resulted in a consensus set of recommendations that will serve as the basis for future actions It is important to include evolution in all science curricula at every level National Science Education Standards NRC that call for the integration of evolution across all life sciences with the developmentally appropriate are a good way to accomplish this goal A new publication from the NRC offers guidelines for schools on how to integrate evolution into the life science curriculum A number of studies have demonstrated that a more thorough teaching of evolution is linked to higher levels of student understanding and belief in the existence of evolution It is difficult to determine causal effects in the classroom since school curricula dont change on a regular basis and are affected by the timing of state board of education and the gubernatorial election To overcome this problem I employ a longitudinal data set that allows me to account for state and year fixed effects as well as individuallevel variations in teacher beliefs about evolution Another important finding is that teachers who are more comfortable teaching evolution report having fewer personal barriers to teaching it This is in line with the hypothesis that more confident faculty are less likely to avoid evolutionrelated topics in the classroom and may be more likely to employ strategies like a reconciliatory method that is known to boost undergraduate students acceptance of evolution
