How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T5549 then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T5549 via an uncolored wire The ECU uses this information to control fuel and boost It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and the location of the camshaft so that it can activate the spark and injectors If this sensor fails when it fails the ECU will display a P00160 error code This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing The code wont appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors G4 or G40 Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the best method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU It should read about 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum Check for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have problems with this part 2 Injectors Yesterday when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant drop in power It was like the engine had run out of gas Or my injectors werent firing I pulled out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was dry I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks the three with gazoline jump out The 4th one stays closed I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14553055 and 4855 i get zero Ohm Im assuming the issue is elsewhere I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it is running fine with the G28 connected However the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM The temperature sensor for coolant G62 shows the wrong temperature of that is 49c even after unplugging it I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0 I dont know what to do I feel like ive pretty much all other possibilities out Im concerned that i may have missed something If anyone has suggestions please chime in TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 gets a signal from the RPM sensor The GMstyle sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or from a parts store Test This Resource site out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors side up and 2 2nd from the left on the black connectors end They should be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about fuel injector timing etc In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If either of these goes badly you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which could cause engine shut down The signs of a malfunctioning G28 sensor are an inaccurate rev counter for the gearbox the gears are shifting faster than normal andor a misfire when you are in gear It is possible that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs The good news is that they are very affordable and easy to find particularly in the case of a Bosch model which is what ours are If you prefer GMs version of this component is an option 5 Tachometer A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle It is a crucial part of your Audis transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicles crankshaft is turning This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components in the car to be affected The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission over the flywheel ring It transmits a signal via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T5549 The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster You can check the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer between the ECU pin T5549 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a1 trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a12 It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those points This is a typical part that is found across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU Good ones could be available in wrecking yards
