Study of Chinese Learners Pedagogical Choices in Korean In addition to learnerinternal factors CLKs understanding of their own resistance to change and the relational affordances they had access to were important For instance the RIs of TS and ZL both mentioned their relationships with their local professors as a significant reason for them to choose to not criticize the strictness of a professor see example 2 This article reviews all local pragmatic research on Korean until 2020 It focuses on pragmatic fundamental topics like Discourse Construction Tests DCTs The Discourse Completion Test DCT is an instrument that is widely used in research that is based on pragmatic principles It has many strengths but it also has some drawbacks The DCT for example is unable to account for cultural and individual differences Furthermore it is also the case that the DCT can be biased and can result in overgeneralizations It is important to carefully analyze the data before being used for research or assessment Despite its limitations the DCT is a useful tool for investigating the relationship between prosody and information structure in nonnative speakers Its ability in two or more stages to alter social variables that affect politeness can be a strength This ability can be used to study the impact of prosody in different cultural contexts In the field of linguistics the DCT has become one of the most significant tools for analyzing learners behaviors in communication It can be used to study various aspects such as the manner of speaking turn taking and lexical selection It can also be used to determine the phonological difficulty of learners their speech Recent research utilized the DCT as tool to evaluate the ability to resist of EFL students Participants were presented with a variety of scenarios to choose from and then asked to select the most appropriate response The researchers found the DCT to be more efficient than other methods of refusal such as the use of a questionnaire or video recordings However they cautioned that the DCT should be used with caution and include other types of data collection methods DCTs are typically developed with specific linguistic criteria in mind like content and form These criteria are based on intuition and based upon the assumptions of test designers They may not be accurate and they may misrepresent the way that ELF learners actually resist requests in realworld interactions This issue calls for further research on alternative methods of assessing refusal competency In a recent research study DCT responses to student inquiries via email were compared to the responses from an oral DCT The results revealed that DCT encouraged more direct and conventionally formbased requests and made a less frequent use of hints than email data did Metapragmatic Questionnaires MQs This study explored Chinese learners decisions regarding their use of Korean by using a range of experimental tools including Discourse Completion Tasks DCTs Metapragmatic Questionnaires Refusal Interviews RIs Participants were 46 CLKs at the upperintermediate who participated in DCTs MQs and RIs They were also required to provide reflections on their opinions and their refusals to participate in RIs The results showed that CLKs often chose to defy native Korean pragmatism norms Their choices were influenced primarily by four factors that included their personalities and multilingual identities their ongoing lives and their relationship affordances These findings have pedagogical implications for L2 Korean assessment The MQ data was analyzed in order to identify the participants choices in practice The data was categorized according Ishihara 2010s definition of pragmatic resistance Then we compared their choices made by the participants with their linguistic performance on the DCTs to determine if they were indicative of pragmatic resistance The interviewees were asked to explain their decision to use pragmatic language in a particular situation The results of the MQs and DCTs were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and ztests It was found that the CLKs often resorted to the use of euphemistic phrases such as sorry and thank you This was likely due to their lack of experience with the target language which resulted in an inadequate knowledge of korea pragmatic norms The results showed that the CLKs preferences for converging to L1 or departing from both L1 as well as L2 pragmatic norms varies according to the DCT situations In situations 3 and 12 CLKs preferred diverging from both L1pragmatic norms and L2 norms while in Situation 14 CLKs preferred a convergence to L1 norms The RIs showed that CLKs knew about their practical resistance to each DCT situation The RIs were conducted onetoone within two days after participants completed the MQs The RIs which were transcribed and recorded by two independent coders who then coded them The coding process was an iterative process in which the coders discussed and read each transcript The results of the coding process are compared with the original RI transcripts to determine if they captured the underlying pragmatic behavior Refusal Interviews The key issue in research on pragmatics is Why do some learners decide to not accept nativespeaker norms Recent research attempted to answer this question by using various experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities Participants were required to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2 They were then invited to an RI where they were asked to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation The results showed that CLKs on average did not follow the patterns of native speakers in more than 40 of their responses 프라그마틱 무료 did this even though they were able to create patterns that were similar to natives They were aware of their practical resistance They attributed their choices to learnerinternal aspects such as their personalities and identities that are multilingual as well as ongoing life histories They also referred external factors such as relational affordances They described for example how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform better in terms of the cultural and linguistic norms at their university The interviewees expressed their concern about the social pressures or penalties they might face when their social norms were violated They were concerned that their native friends would think they are foreigners and think they are not intelligent This was a concern similar to the concerns expressed by Brown 2013 and Ishihara 2009 These results suggest that native speakers pragmatic norms arent the default preference for Korean learners They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency tests But it would be prudent for future researchers to revisit their applicability in specific situations and in various contexts This will allow them to better understand the effects of different cultural environments on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of students in L2 Additionally this will help educators develop more effective methodologies to teach and test the koreas pragmatics Seukhoon Paul Choi is principal advisor to Stratways Group a geopolitical risk consultancy based out of Seoul Case Studies The case study method is an investigative technique that employs participantcentered indepth studies to study a specific subject This method uses numerous sources of information like interviews observations and documents to confirm its findings This type of investigation is useful for examining unique or complex subjects that are difficult to quantify with other methods In a case study the first step is to clearly define both the subject and the objectives of the study This will allow you to identify what aspects of the subject are important to investigate and which aspects can be left out It is also beneficial to review existing literature related to the subject to gain a broad knowledge of the subject and to place the case study within a larger theoretical context This study was based on an opensource platform the KMMLU Leaderboard 50 as well as its Koreanspecific benchmarks HyperCLOVA X and LDCC Solar figure 1 below The results of this experiment showed that L2 Korean learners were highly dependent on the influence of native models They were more likely to pick incorrect answers which were literal interpretations This was a deviance from accurate pragmatic inference They also showed a distinct tendency to add their own text or garbage to their responses This also lowered the quality of their answers Additionally the participants in this case study were primarily L2 Korean learners who had achieved level 4 on the Test of Proficiency in Korean TOPIK at the end of their third or second year of university and were aiming for level 6 on their next attempt They were asked to respond to questions regarding their WTCSPCC and comprehension and pragmatic awareness The interviewees were presented two situations each involving an imaginary interaction with their interactants and were asked to choose one of the following strategies when making an inquiry Interviewees were then asked to justify their choice The majority of participants attributed their pragmatist opposition to their personalities For instance TS claimed that she was difficult to connect to and so she was reluctant to inquire about the wellbeing of her friend with the burden of a job despite her belief that native Koreans would do so
