Evolution Korea For a long time the Korean scientific community avoided engaging with creationists for fear of giving the movement more credence However silence is no longer an option The STR has been fighting to get evolutionrelated content from textbooks including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird This is only one aspect of how the development paradigm has changed What is Evolution Evolution is a concept in science that explains changes in genetic characteristics over time The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environment which can cause variations in genes or even whole genomes These changes can over many generations lead to the creation of new species Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution It describes how individuals with advantageous traits can reproduce faster and longer than those with less advantageous traits This variation in reproduction could eventually lead to the development and emergence of new species The word evolution comes from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing but the concept itself has had many different meanings since it took form in the fields of science and elsewhere Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin Charless grandfather and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predetermined to change into another species The term transmutation was coined by Lamarcks disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy SaintHilaire to describe this notion Charles Lyell who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 attacked this idea and borrowed the term evolution from Geoffroys student to describe the view that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable manner Evolutionary biologists define it more recently as a process through which living organisms develop traits to improve their chances of surviving or producing offspring As time passes genetic variation can cause a population acquire new physical characteristics or biological functions This variation in gene frequencies is known as natural selection and it drives most evolutionary change Nongenetic changes such as an increase in muscle mass through exercise or diet cant be considered to be evolutionary because they dont pass on to future generations Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial even though it has been proven to be valid by a multitude of scientific tests and that it has been tested over time They claim that the concept should not be taught in schools In South Korea creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools This includes the removal of all references about the evolutionary origins for humans as well as Archaeopteryx a feathered dino which is believed to be the birds ancestor Why is Evolution Important Evolution explains how Earth and all living species evolved It is one of the fundamentals of biology and helps scientists to understand how living things function and grow Evolution also helps us understand the connections between species Scientists study evolution to better understand the natural world and to discover useful information like the development of new treatments The evidence for evolution is overwhelming There is no other scientific theory that can explain so much about the universe and life on earth and has been rigorously tested and verified over a long period of time Many people including religious leaders are in favor of the scientific theory It is essential to remember that evolutionary biology does not contradict religious beliefs because it only addresses physical objects events and processes In reality many religious people have found ways to reconcile their beliefs with evolution Some Christians for instance believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share a common ancestry to other animals It is important that scientists and educators speak out for the teaching evolution Unfortunately in a few countries around the world there is a growing antievolutionist sentiment In the United States efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made headway in a few states In South Korea a group called the Society for Textbook Revise an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research KAC is pushing for textbooks that cover the evolution of horses and their avian ancestor Archaeopteryx Although these are alarming developments it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming The evidence comes from a diverse range of sources such as fossils genetic studies and the behavior of living organisms Other scientists independently verify the evidence The majority of scientists believe in the theory of evolution The reason for this is many different reasons Some scientists study evolution to make practical discoveries such as developing medications or developing new medicines while others are driven by an interest in improving the quality of life for animals and plant species typically to benefit humans Some are simply curious while others have a deep faith in God and are seeking to know how the universe works What is Creationism Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe They also believe that the Bible is Gods word and should be interpreted in a literal manner While not all creationists are Christian but many are Creationists are usually divided into two categories Young Earth Creationists YEC or old earth creationists YECs are the most well known type of creationist and they believe that God created the world exactly as described in the Bible They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is literal and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently OECs may be less popular However their beliefs are just as fierce like those of YECs OECs believe that the universe as well as Earth are billions of years old and that evolution is a lie Both types of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth 에볼루션 바카라 argue that evolution is impossible because it would require a miracle and that the scientists who founded modern science shied away from miracles due to fear of losing credibility Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation and refer to their belief theistic evolution This is also referred to as continuous evolutionism or the evolution of species created This theory states that God creates the original species and allows them to change over time Then these evolutionary changes will result in new species similar to the original ones Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event known as the Great Flood Creationists believe that all species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved They also deny the notion of abiogenesis and argue that the selfreplicating creation of organisms from nonliving matter is impossible In general the creationists oppose the teaching of evolution in schools Numerous professional associations such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education endorse this view and so do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America Some scientists and educational institutions are however more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curricula What is Creationism When people think of the concept of creationism many of them think of the United States South Korea also has an antievolution group Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their editions The Society for Textbook Revise an independent body which is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research KACCR is the one who has led this campaign STR has won its first victory in removing instances of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks Its next target is to remove portions of Darwins notorious finchresearch as well as on human evolution STR claims that it has the support of around 4000 families and individuals Its mission is to cut out what it regards as the atheist materialism that creates a bleak worldview for students It also seeks to counter the influence of American creationists in the United States A survey of students in biology revealed that half of them didnt believe in evolution The causes arent clear however they could be related to religious beliefs or the absence of fulltime creation scientists in the country The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past It publishes a bimonthly magazine Creation and has published books One of them was a textbook on natural science that had a creationist perspective This sparked an interest among college communities In 1991 an academic and minister started teaching Creation Science in one university and it continues to be taught to this day On August 67 1993 coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research Six lecturers from outside the country including ICRs John Morris and Steven Austin addressed thousands of people KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries too KACR plans to establish a Creation Science Education Center in the future
