How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor audi car keys is located at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T5549 then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission directly above the flywheel ring The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T5549 The ECU uses this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way If this sensor fails the ECU will show an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft arent in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain The code wont appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors G4 or G40 Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation If youre having issues with this part check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay 2 Injectors Yesterday as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive drop in power It was like the engine was running out of gas Or my injectors werent firing In the morning i removed the spark plugs 3 were drenched in gazoline the fourth was dry When I start the engine there are no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out but the 4th stays shut I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 145530554855145548 i get 0ohm So i assume the problem is elsewhere I also tried to reset the PID but without success The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM The temperature sensor for coolant G62 shows the wrong temp value 49c even if I unplug it I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0 audi a1 car key m not sure what to do I think Ive eliminated everything else But im worried that I might have missed something If anyone has suggestions please chime in TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store Test them out to do just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors side up and 2 2nd from the left on the black end of the connector They should be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors etc To accomplish this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If either of these sensors go wrong you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal andor a misfire in the gear If you experience any of these issues it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible especially in the case of the Bosch sensor like ours If you prefer GMs version of this part is an excellent choice 5 Tachometer A failing engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your vehicle Its a vital component of the Audis transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the cars crankshaft is turning This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other car components to be affected The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T5549 through an uncolored wire The ECU utilizes this signal to regulate fuel and boost and also to timigrate It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer between ECU pin T5549 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a1 trace 79trace 79 and between T6a1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a12 You should see a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas This is a common part across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards
